New Year, New You: Choose Your Change!
This image from @earthlyeducation says it all. You’re supposed to change.
In fact, you don’t really have a choice in the matter. You ARE changing; every minute of every day.
The choice you have is in HOW you change.
Are you merely ‘getting older’, or are you embracing the wisdom of having lived? Are you constantly learning or are you staunchly staying stuck in limiting beliefs? Are you making new connections, or are you deciding that you have enough friends in your life? The choice is yours, and each choice determines the change you will experience.
In 2023, I started volunteering at Agape Table, a nonprofit community organization in Winnipeg. I am joined by other members of a women’s group called Happy Monkey Club, started by Carol Ploen Hosegood over 15 years ago. Carol’s vision has been to create a space for women to connect, to play, to be healthy, and to contribute. Each Wednesday from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, a group of 4-5 of us, make sandwiches, bag pastries, or chop potatoes; all of which will be used to prepare bagged lunches for adults and children who are housed at risk, homeless, experiencing low come, living with disabilities, new comers and many more.
Sometimes I have known one or two of the women who come to volunteer, and often I have not; and I have left with a new friend. We chat about every topic under the sun, we laugh, we share our own stories and challenges, and we leave with hearts and minds that are filled with positive energy!
I have been grateful to meet the petite Laura, who was first a parton of Agape and is now a part of the internal team. Each day she greets us with a gorgeous face filled with jewels and eyes that are wise beyond her years on earth. And Aaron, the Volunteer Coordinator, a tall, gregarious man who oozes kindness and compassion for everyone he meets. Every time we go, we are thanked by them and others who are part of the Agape team. And we thank them right back.
My wish for you is that you choose to change in ways that bring you more joy, more fun, more connection, more contribution, more meaning, and more wellbeing. Life is, indeed, short; and the quality of the journey is yours to create.
Happy 2024!
