Your BEST Work

I am thrilled to be a contributing blogger for the Huffington Post.? I saw Arianna Huffington speak at the SHRM conference in Las Vegas in June; she was informative, entertaining and engagaing – a true inspiration!? I knew I wanted to be connected with her and the great work she is doing through the Huffington Post.

My first post was uploaded recently, it was titled ‘Be Your BEST’.? The post included some key tips to do your BEST work:

  • Be Thoughtful:??Take time to regularly tune – in to your thoughts.? What story are you telling yourself, and how well is that story serving you?
  • Energize Yourself: A fully energized human being needs proper nutrition, adequate fluids and a strong body.? Are you doing your best to ?fill up? with energy each and every day??
  • Sleep Well: Your sleep (or, rather, lack of it) may?be killing you!?? A good nights? sleep restores your energy and balances your hormones in order to repair damaged cells, regulate your appetite, and boost your immune system.?
  • Take time to ‘just be’: Have you noticed that your best ideas come to you in the strangest places?? Like, in the shower?? ?When you allow your mind to be still, creative and innovative ideas seem to just appear!?

With Labour Day just passing, a day to celebrate work, being your BEST?seems a fitting topic of reflection for us all (although you might not have done the reflecting during your long weekend!!)

In the Winnipeg Free Press?recently, an article by Carol Sanders referenced a survey of attitudes toward employment, called?Young workers love the job, older ones the money.? I thought it was interesting that the poll found that most young people?are working in their chosen field and loving it while most older employees are working largely for the cash.? Then, an interesting phenomenon occurs when?older workers?retire early; those who choose to go back to work, tend to look at work in a new way – so that it better blends with their lifestyle and interests.??

I wonder if part of the reason Baby Boomers are ‘doing it for the money’ is because they have developed a set of habits over time that have decreased their intrinsic motivation – and joy – at work.? Many younger workers seem to understand and focus on doing work that brings them joy – and older workers who start a post-retirement career do too!

So, I wonder…why not look at work? – and do work – in a new way… right now!? No matter how old you are.? When you are at your BEST, your are rested, present and ready to create positive outcomes for yourself, your organization, and your family.? Implementing simple strategies to do your BEST can?help you maximize your performance and enhance your life.? And, I think, the money will follow!

Joseph Bork, Program Director, St. Mary’s University
“I am usually the type to sit in the crowd, quietly take it all in, and take notes, notes that end up in a binder, often never to be seen once I return to work. Deri was engaging, fun and as real as they get. I was so moved by her session that I shocked myself by approaching her after the session to chat. During the session I didn’t need to take notes because her concepts hit home and stuck with me. I have already taken her advice and acted on her tips and tools to be more positive. Her positivity is contagious and her message is one that everyone should take time to listen to.”
Amy Normal, VP, Corporate Services, Said Business School, University of Oxford
“I had the privilege of hearing Deri keynote at our conference. She captivates, motivates, and positively engages an audience with her unique combination of wisdom about neuroscience and positive behaviors that can be life changing when put into action. I would recommend her without any reservation for those seeking a speaker who can move an audience – from associates on a manufacturing floor to members of an executive leadership team – into action. Her takeaways are designed for positive impact. Prepare to laugh, to be curious, to be hungry for more time to listen to Deri.”
